Reportage wedding photography

What is reportage wedding photography? I approach weddings in an unobtrusive way – often known as documentary or reportage wedding photography.  The wedding day goes by so fast, that having a photographic journal of the day unfolding allows you and your family to relive the day forever. My reportage wedding photography images are unposed and non-directed (I wont ask the bride to “pretend” to put her earrings on so I can get a picture). My aim is to blend into the background and quietly go about delivering photographs that tell the days story.

Lots of Photographers offer ‘reportage’ wedding photography - what makes you different? Some photographers see ‘reportage’ as a buzz word and do not actually offer true reportage coverage. A quick look through a photographers portfolio will show if they capture natural or staged moments. I am a member of the Wedding and Photojournalistic Association, an elite group of photographers that capture weddings in a true documentary way, and uphold the strict guidelines of the membership. I strive to be unobtrusive and tell the story of your wedding day.

Do you take any posed shots of the Bride and Groom? I am often requested to take posed shots of the bride before the ceremony, as well as stylish posed images of the newlyweds afterwards. I am more than happy to accommodate this, recently married myself I understand that this also provides the bride and groom with some ‘downtime’ away from mingling with their guests to take in the moment (and also provide some stunning shots of the happy couple alone). View my ‘formal wedding photography’ gallery.

Do you do group photos? Yes – I usually take a maximum of 5-6 group shots (including a shot of all guests if space allows). This can take upto 30 minutes. Just remember that the more group/posed shots I take the less time to capture the natural moments of you and your guests. View my ‘formal wedding photography’ gallery.

What equipment do you use? I only use professional equipment. I shoot on a Canon 5d Mk II, with a selection of Pro L series lenses. I also carry backup gear – should I drop or break any of my cameras or lenses!

Do you use flash? I try to avoid flash as much as possible as this helps me capture more natural images. However during winter /evenings I often use off camera of flash if the available light is not sufficient.

What areas do you cover? I cover any area of the UK. Travel costs are included in my price for any weddings within a 50 mile radius of Manchester. However additional charges are incurred for weddings further afield.

Are you a full time photographer? Yep – its my job, the best you can have in my opinion :-)

What images are provided on the CD? All edited images from the day, depending on the time of the wedding etc this can vary from 300-400 images. Images are provided in a selection of black and white and colour. I shoot all of my photos in colour, and convert some of them to black and white during editing. The bride and groom can request any of the photos in black and white or colour.

What can I do with my images on CD? You have full reproduction authorisation for all the images on the disc – printing them for yourself, friends and family at your convenience. However I strongly recommend to research which printing company you use. Cheap printing can make your images loose their quality.

I’m a little nervous about having my photograph taken – do you offer pre wedding photography? Yes! A pre wedding shoot is always great fun, allowing you to get used to me, the camera – and get some great images – more information can be found here.

Do you provide wedding albums? Yes, albums are included in all of my packages, except the ‘digital’ only option. Full details of the luxury albums can be found in my wedding brochure, please contact me and I’ll email you a copy.

Can you show my photographs from weddings completed? If you are interested in my wedding photography, please contact me and I can show you a number of complete weddings.

I like your style of photography, how do we book? Please give me a ring or send an email and we can have a chat. I can check my diary, and if I’m available I usually like to meet up with the bride and groom so they can be sure I’m the right photographer for them! Upon meeting We will discuss your requirements and my approach in detail. A £250 deposit is required to secure the date.

Portraits

How long do portrait sessions last? Usually 1-2 hours. However I have been known to take 4-5 hours for newborns that just want to cry. Alternatively if little ones are not playing ball, I will come back for another session for no extra charge.

What can I expect from a session? Relaxed and informal. I like to have the session in an environment that you are comfortable in. Playing games is the order of the day for toddlers and children, kids see the session as fun and not boring. Older clients and larger groups are a bit more structured and posed due to the nature of the photos captured.

What should I wear? I’m a fan of casual clothing, whatever the sitter feels comfortable in should be worn. Plain neutral clothes work best for portraits, this allows the photo to focus on the person rather than what they are wearing. If more than 1 person is present their clothing should compliment each other to avoid a clash of colours. Please avoid large logos or busy patterns.

How can I play the video DVDThe DVD should play on most standard DVD players and home computers/laptops.

Can I have all the images electronically? I use professional photo labs for the printing of all my images, providing high quality images that ensure the moment remains on print for generations to come. However I can provided images on a CD/DVD for self printing. Details can be found on my prices page.

Do you provide follow up sessions for babies? Yes. These can take place over a period of 1 year and capture the key stages as your babies grows to a toddler. Discounts are available for multiple sessions.

What are location portrait sessions? These are photographs taken outside in a local area. These images allow children to relax as they soon forget they are infront of a camera. They provide images that can be more natural than studio style photographs.

Great, how do I book? Just send me an email, or give me a call – we can discuss availability and get a date arranged for the shoot!
